Routines and Procedures
Turning in Homework
Your child will be responsible for reading to/with an adult for 20 minutes each night and recording it on their monthly reading logs. Reading logs can be found in your child's reading bag that will be sent home beginning in September. I will check reading logs each Friday to monitor progress. Reading log completion will go towards the "Home Practice" grade on your child's report card.
Lunch & Milk Money
Hot lunch (school lunch) and/or breakfast can be ordered on a daily basis. Lunch and breakfast calendars will be uploaded to the school website each month so you and your child are aware of the choices for each day. Your child may also purchase just a milk to have with his/her cold lunch. Please check the district website for updated pricing. If you send in money for your child’s breakfast, lunch, or milk; PLEASE enclose it in a sealed envelope/baggie with your child’s name and what the money is for, and place it in the zippered pouch of your child's G.O. Book binder. Please try to send in the exact amount if possible. If you would like to pay online, you may do that instead by visiting the Big Hollow website.
**We place all cold lunches in a basket that is carried down to the lunchroom. Please label your child’s full name on the outside of his/her lunchbox for easy identification.
Snack
Your child will be allowed to eat one snack every day in the afternoon. After the first day of school, I will not be providing snacks. Please make sure that your child comes with a small, healthy snack. A snack should be sent in addition to your child’s lunch. Candy will not be allowed as a snack.
Star of the Week
Each week beginning in September we will pick a “Star of the Week.” During this week your child will be recognized for his/her hard work and will be treated like a “star”. When your child is chosen, he/she will bring home the Star Student bag the Friday before, which contains a detailed sheet outlining what the following week will consist of. It will be a fun week where your child can share special things about him/her and really “shine.”
Birthdays
Birthdays are a big deal in our classroom and we will sing and celebrate for everyone! In conjunction with the school wellness initiative, students will not be celebrating with food in class. Instead, your child is welcome to bring in a non-food treat such as small goodie bags (no candy, please), pencils, erasers, or stickers. Thank you for understanding that this policy has been put into effect to increase good eating habits and to prevent food allergy issues. If you choose to send in celebration "treats", please send them to school with your child or drop them off in the office by 2:00 pm.
*Summer birthdays will be celebrated at the end of the school-year unless you inform me that you want your child to celebrate on his/her half birthday.
Library
Library books are due every Friday. If your child does not bring back his/her book, then he/she will not be able to check out any new books until the old book has been returned. Also, please be aware that if a library book is damaged or lost, compensation will be required. Library is every Thursday morning.
Gym Shoes
Please send your child to school with clean gym shoes to be kept at school for P.E. class. Velcro shoes are appreciated if your child cannot tie his/her own shoes.
*(If you’ve already bought gym shoes with laces and your child does not know how to tie them, that is okay! Please just continue to work with your child so they can master this skill.)
Parent Communication
Class Website: Please save our class website to your "Favorites" and refer to it frequently. It is full of helpful information! The website should be checked weekly for updated announcements. I will also post a newsletter to the website every Friday (they will not be printed and sent home) to inform you about what our class has done that week.
G.O. Book: The daily G.O. Book Binder will be sent home with your child at the end of every day and must be returned by the student the very next morning. In this binder there will be your child's planner which contains the monthly reading logs. There may also be informational papers for parents/guardians.
Student Planner: Inside the G.O. binder you'll find a planner that our district has provided all students with this year. We will be using them to gradually teach/practice organizational skills. Students will be writing down important events (test days, spirit days, holidays, etc.) and using it to record their reading minutes. This planner will also be used as a communication notebook for you and me. Daily behavior reflections will be recorded in this planner. There will also be enough space in the planner for you to write any questions, comments, or concerns that you have regarding homework, behavior, etc.
